Description
Until the Corvette C8 generation, the only American built mid-engine cars were the Ford GT40 and the Pontiac Fiero (1984-1988). The Fiero was originally sold to GM execs as a fuel efficient 4 cylinder “commuter car.” Due to the struggling sales of the Corvette, Pontiac engineers were not initially allowed to build a “sports car.” But by 1988, Pontiac engineers had the car they intended all along with a V6, 5 speed manual, and a completely revamped Lotus inspired suspension. Less than 26,000 Fieros were made in 1988, of which only 6,848 were GTs.
